Floods

Flooding can happen in every U.S. state and territory. It is a result of heavy rains that cause rivers and streams to over flow, ocean waves coming onshore, snow melting too fast or dams or levees breaking. A flood may be only a few inches of water or it may cover a whole house or community. No matter how severe, a flood can be very destructive for humans, animals and property. They are the most common of all natural hazards!

People throughout history have traditionally located in areas where water is readily available. It is a source of life for livestock, agriculture, and transporting of goods and people. Today, living near water is considered a luxury for its beauty, and recreational value. The problems come when water rises. Even though the ancient civilizations, and early settlers of regions around the world have depended upon waters and seasonal flooding for their existence, the modern world with industrial and resort cities located on or near rivers can be very devastated by flood waters. One of the most vital forces on Earth has become a villain.
