The DO'S and DON'TS when creating a student project
DO'S
* be certain students know how to make change
* have students read through instructions, highlight unknown words, and define together in class
* provide a system of checks and balances that make dishonesty unappealing
* do have students make contacts such as: thank yous, phone calls, personal introductions, etc. (good etiquette practice time)
* do be certain that you have administrative cooperation and support
* do make certain STUDENTS know that they are expected to clean up work area
and replace all tools to proper storage area BEFORE leaving the classroom or shop
* do hold students accountable for completion of assignments and projects
* do have all materials located and ready for use before beginning
* do make a list of all materials you have checked out to students
* do have tangible consequences for not completing required work
* do have sequential steps for a project and during down time between steps have other activities scheduled
* do prepare for the limitations of your students (expect limitations)
* do repeat redundancies regularly :)
* do tell them, show them and then HAVE THE STUDENT do it
DON'TS
* do not assume students understand instructions--go through them together
* do not leave classroom or work area unattended
* do not allow students to have beverages or food near the computers and machines
* do not expect students to have common sense
